You only have one chance to make a good first impression. This goes for websites too. A website should be an extension of your business or brand, so you should always make sure people don’t get a bad taste in their mouths on the first visit. Here is a small list of website mistakes that you will want to avoid.
Outdated Information
One of the biggest mistakes that I have seen in my experience is companies not maintaining their websites. This can be simple pricing issues on an ecommerce site, or service information. This can be very hurtful for a business, especially if a phone number or email address has changed. Not giving your visitors proper ways to contact you can result in lost business and revenue.
Broken Links
Another issue that comes up are broken links. Webmasters and businesses should always make sure that all internal and external links work throughout their site. Always do checks on your website weekly to make sure the links are working properly. If you have a maintenance service contract with your designer or webmaster, this should be in the services offered.
Not Mobile Ready
Over half the people viewing the web these days are doing so on their phones or tablets. Websites need to be able to read properly on a mobile device. Google has now restructured their search algorithms and your site can now be penalized for not being mobile friendly.
Lost Message
Some websites are focused so much on how great the company or brand is that they forget to talk about what they can do for the visitor. Make sure that you have a good balance of what you offer along with case studies and feedback to showcase positive results.
Patchwork of Styles and Features
You always want to stay true to your brand and its message along with having a cohesive look and feel throughout your site. A good rule of thumb is the rule of 3. No more than three colors, no more than three fonts, etc. I look at websites as a part of your marketing. It needs to have a straightforward message and purpose and not get lost in too much flare.
