Welcome again to my blog where I try to provide helpful advice for you and your business from a designer’s point of view. Last week I wrote about establishing your brand identity and what it all encompasses. This week I would like to continue down the path of building a business and help you with the next step, internet real estate.
When you want to make your business known, there are many ways to go about it, but don’t start with the advertising just yet. Make sure you establish your brand on the internet, that means registering a domain name for your website, building your website and creating pages on the many social networks that are available.
What’s a domain name? Well, a domain name is the internet web address for a website such as this one. A domain name can end in a .com, or a .net, .org, etc. There are ones for government, education, and more. The most valuable and sought after is the .com since that is the most common. So when you register your domain name, you’re looking to set up an address where your customers can reach you on the internet.
You always want to make sure that you use an address that is easy to remember and is not too long. Sometimes the domain name is already taken by another company, that’s when you get creative, but not too creative. You still want it to represent your business without being some crazy code that needs to be deciphered. An example of this would be for XYZ Corporation to create a domain www.xyzcorporation.com, if it’s taken, the next step would be something like www.xyzcorp.com. This still has the company’s name and ends up being shorter and easier to remember. Sometimes business will purchase both and have the addresses lead to the same site. The same goes with top level domains like .net, .biz, etc.
